Fresh waters are aquatic habitats of great diversity and may be divided into the following groups: standing or still waters (lakes, pools, swamps, wetlands) and flowing waters (springs, streams, rivers). Flowing waters are divided into white waters (rapids) and calm waters.

Through freshwater habitats are found in all climatic zones of the earth the overwhelming majority of fish kept in aquarium are from the tropics and subtropics.
